Celebration Arts Presents: GEE’S BEND by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder. February 7 – March 1, 2014. Focuses on a family in the real community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, which is now famous for the beautiful quilts created by the women that grew up there. The play follows this family, starting in 1939, as they deal with the personal, social and economic conditions of African-Americans in this community. It moves to 1965 and the struggles for civil rights and culminates in 2002 where the colors and brush strokes of empowered lives bear witness to the triumph of strength, perseverance, dedication, undying belief and love.. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Ticket prices:$15 general, $13 students, seniors and SARTA members;  $8 all seats on Thursday nights. February 7 – March 1, 2014. The Verve of Quilted Textiles
African American Quilts from the Sandra McPherson Collection, January 21, 2014-March 14, 2014
Revealing the rich tradition and aesthetic vision of the African American quilting community, The Verve of Quilted Textiles: African American Quilts from the Sandra McPherson Collection opens at the UC Davis Design Museum on January 21 and runs through March 14, 2014. The exhibition presents more than a dozen quilts created by generations of African American quilters, including samples from Gee’s Bend, Alabama, and works created by local quilters in California. Enriching American culture, the quilts survey tangible connections with design, art, and literature, social and economic subjects.
