The Sacramento Center for the Textile Arts presents nationally known quilt instructor, lecturer, author and designer of original quilts and garments Karen Boutte. She will be here March 6, 2013 to present a trunk show and lecture - The Delightful Diva. The program begins at 7:00 pm in the Shepard Garden and Art Center located at 3330 McKinley Blvd, Sacramento. Shirley Sanders presents Gourds are Nature's Canvas: A Gourd workshop Saturday, March 9 at 10 am at the Brick House Art Gallery in Oak Park! Gourds are Nature's Canvas! Spiritual Practice as a Sacred Lifestyle: Namonyah Soipan, Ph.D. Is a shamanistic practitioner who has lived and trained with shamans in Afrika, Asia, South America, Europe and India. She brings these eclectic healing traditions into her work as she holds sacred space for women and men who are on their healing path. She experienced a radical spiritual transformation after having lived with the Maasai people of Kenya and Tanzania, East Africka 28 years ago for one year. She has published Mystical Journeys, Sacred Return and is currently writing another book, Activating Thunder, about the spiritual teachings of her shamanic journey. This mini workshop, sponsored by the Studio 7 Collective, will be held at The Brickhouse Art Gallery in Oak Park, 2838 36th Street, Historic Oak Park, Sacramento, CA. Participants will learn about African Trade beads and paint trade bead designs on wood beads. Cost: Free, Date: April 6th from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. A great thing happens to families when they do art together: They begin to talk and laugh and lighten up. National Quilting Day - March 16, 2013.The theme for 2013 is "Celebrate America", coordinating with the show theme for the 44th Annual National Quilting Association Quilt Show. CELEBRATE AMERICA! Please send photographs and short stories of your completed NQD projects, so that we may showcase our collective efforts at the 44th Annual National Quilting Association Quilt Show. The show will be held June 27-29, 2013 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. The evening featured Sacramento’s premier screening of “Scenes of Siddis Life,” by Dr.  Henry John Drewal, a film documenting the history of patchwork quilts known as kawandi and quilters of African descent living in India. We honored our 19 quilters. We also acknowledged the community who supported our successful Quilt Exhibit: A Stitch in Time: The Past, Present and Future: Highlighting African-American Quilters and Quilts; and we celebrated with joy.

SQC hosted Ms. Alice Beasley, Quilter & Artist







Alice Beasley’s visit to Brickhouse Art Gallery : The Sisters Quilting Collective (SQC) at the Brickhouse Art Gallery hosted Ms. Alice Beasley,Quilter and Artist Saturday, February  23, 2013.  Alice Beasley has been creating fabric portrait quilts and wire sculptures in the San Francisco Bay area since 1988. Ms. Beasley is a member of the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland & the Studio Art Quilters Association. More than 150 community members gathered (from throughout the region: Roseville, Auburn, Davis, Woodland, Elk Grove, Folsom, Lodi,Stockton,West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, and Vacaville), for the reception and community lecture. Thursday, February 28, 2013 from 6-8pm the Quilt Exhibit’s Closing Reception. Featuring Sacramento’s premier screening of the film “Scenes of Siddis Life,” by Dr. Henry John Drewal, a film documenting the history of patchwork quilts known as kawandi and quilters of African descent living in India.

The mission of the SQC is to bring awareness of the historical value of African-American quilts, as well as to celebrate and continue the tradition of quilting
